Velvet sheets: the quick answer

  • Velvet is a winter fabric. It's at its best from November to February, and too warm for a summer night without AC.
  • Most velvet bedding is polyester or a polyester blend, which holds about 0.4% moisture against cotton's 8.5%. That's why it feels warm and can feel clammy in humid weather.
  • Choose a velvet fitted sheet with a pocket depth at least equal to your mattress, including any topper.
  • velvet fitted sheets at Pakistani online stores cost about Rs 2,990 to Rs 5,300.

What Velvet Bedding Is Made Of

Velvet is a pile fabric: short, dense fibres stand up from the base weave, which gives it a soft, plush surface and deep colour. Velvet can be woven from cotton or silk, but most velvet bedding sold online lists polyester or a polyester-cotton blend. Many Pakistani listings don't state the composition at all. If the product page doesn't say, ask before you order.

Velvet Bed Sheets vs Cotton: Which Is Warmer?

Velvet is warmer for two reasons. Its dense pile traps a layer of air against your body, and its polyester base absorbs very little moisture. Under standard test conditions, polyester holds about 0.4% of its weight in moisture compared with 8.5% for cotton (ASTM D1909). Heat and sweat stay close to you. In a cold room that feels cosy. In a humid one it feels sticky.

When a Velvet Sheet Makes Sense in Pakistan

Velvet earns its place in cold cities. Islamabad's average January low is 3.6°C, and Quetta has recorded temperatures as low as −18.3°C. In homes with little or no heating, a velvet sheet makes the bed noticeably warmer before you even pull up the razai.

Karachi is a different case. Humidity there averages up to 75% in August, so velvet is best kept for its short winter. Velvet is also the usual fabric for winter weddings. For full coordinated sets, see our bridal bed sheets.

Velvet Fitted Sheet Sizes and Pocket Depth

Fitted velvet sheets are popular because they stay in place on a thick mattress. Typical sets in Pakistan are a single fitted sheet with one pillow cover, or a queen or king fitted sheet with two pillow covers.

  1. Measure the mattress length, width and depth, including any topper.
  2. Choose a pocket depth at least equal to that depth.
  3. Compare the sheet size in inches on the product page, not just the word "king" or "queen".

A pocket that is too shallow will pull off the corners during the night.

Velvet Bedsheet Price in Pakistan

We checked Pakistani online stores in October 2026. Velvet fitted sheets ranged from about Rs 2,990 to Rs 5,300. Single sizes started near Rs 3,700 at one store, and queen and king sets cost Rs 4,199 to Rs 5,299. Prices rise with size, the number of pillow covers, deeper pockets, and jacquard or quilted finishes.

Colour, Pile Direction and Lint

Velvet pile catches light differently depending on the direction it lies, so one sheet can look lighter or darker from different angles. This is normal, not a defect. Black, navy and maroon show lint, dust and pet hair easily. Lighter shades show marks. Choose a colour based on how much upkeep you want.

How to Wash Velvet Sheets

  • Wash separately in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle.
  • Skip bleach and fabric softener, which can dull the pile.
  • Air dry, or tumble dry on low only. High heat can flatten or damage polyester pile.
  • No ironing needed. If you must, use a low setting on the reverse side.
  • Expect a few loose fibres in the first one or two washes.

Velvet Sheet FAQs

Is velvet too hot for Pakistani summers?

Yes, without air conditioning. Velvet's pile traps heat and its polyester base absorbs little sweat, so use it from November to February and switch to cotton for the hot months.

Why does my velvet sheet crackle with static?

Polyester builds static charge in dry winter air. Avoiding high-heat drying and keeping some humidity in the room both help.

Does a velvet sheet shed?

A few loose fibres in the first one or two washes is normal. It settles after that. Wash it separately at first so the fibres don't transfer to other clothes.

Can I machine wash velvet?

Most velvet fitted sheets can go in the machine on a gentle, cold or lukewarm cycle. Check the care label, and dry clean any velvet with embroidery or quilting.

Do I still need a razai with a velvet sheet?

In cold cities, yes. A velvet sheet warms the surface you lie on, but you still need a razai or comforter on top.

Is a Velvet Sheet Right for You?

If you… Choose
Live in Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta or the north Velvet fitted sheet for winter
Live in Karachi Velvet only for December and January, cotton otherwise
Have a deep mattress or topper Fitted velvet with a matching pocket depth
Have pets or want low upkeep A mid-tone shade such as grey or brown
Are dressing a bridal room A coordinated velvet bridal set

The bottom line

For a Pakistani winter, a fitted velvet sheet is one of the simplest ways to make a bed warmer. Measure your mattress depth, pick a shade that suits your upkeep, and keep your velvet bed sheets for November to February, with cotton for the rest of the year.
